Methodology and Approach
We call this the "Inside-Out" model of virtual network development because - it needs to be done in the right order. The model identifies the critical aspects involved in the development of a virtual network and the optimum sequence for addressing them. These aspects are typically achieved through a number of short team workshops interspersed by group collaborative working via conference calls.
1. MISSION AND GOALS: This includes the development of the specific purpose of the network (which should be uniquely differentiated) and the initial short-term objectives the network will focus on.
2. GOVERNANCE AND ROLES: Including the basic rules of membership, the key roles and commitments the network needs to achieve its objectives
3. COMMERCIAL AND LEGAL: Covering the agreements needed between network members such as time commitments, confidentiality, profit-sharing and ownership/rights to collaborative results/IP.
4. PROCESSES AND PRACTICES: New foundational working practices such as conference calls and collaborative document development supported by styles for effective peer-peer commitment management and "self-managed" style of operations.
5. RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGY : Covering the resources and skills which are available/required in terms of each network company and member and the technologies the network and its specific projects will need to both create value and deliver value.
