Designing tomorrow's business today
VISION's distinctive approach to designing enterprises has allowed our clients to achieve extraordinary results.
Examples?
Imagine the simplicity and speed that comes from replacing 300 retail banking processes with three, the actuality of building a reliable and extraordinarily competitive new bank in nine months, the consequences of building enormous power plants in half the time, or what it took and what resulted from delivering concrete on time in grid-locked Mexico City.
We prepare, guide and help our clients as they produce:
- significantly improved bottom-line results
- simpler, clearer, more effective processes
- shorter cycle times
- lower costs without sacrificing quality
- people enthusiastic about learning and building their capabilities
- more satisfaction for all participants -customers, employees, managers, investors, suppliers.
Designing interactions
The design and construction of new processes and enterprises has become extraordinarily complex. In the recent past, our attention was on the interactions among people and things.
We designed the interaction of workers, machines and raw materials, for instance, or office workers and paper containing records about transactions. Or we designed the organisation chart -a hierarchy of authority for action - and what happened in key functions: new products, advertising, brands, distribution, finance, and so forth.
Today, in nearly every walk of life, not one but many specialised teams construct systems, interfaces, databases, networks and structures that orchestrate the work of people worldwide. For example, the simple act of paying a merchant with a credit card triggers activity in literally dozens of offices and locations worldwide.
This exploding complexity cannot be managed by delegating the work to "the IT department". Neither is it possible for non-technical teams to define the work sufficiently to enable technical teams to build the right new systems effectively and rapidly.
Competitive advantages
Companies that lead their industries develop integrated strategy, operations and technological infrastructures that are guided by clear and distinctive narratives.
VISION helps clients invent such narratives and build the kinds of teams that produce decisive competitive advantages. Hard work, luck and basic intelligence help, but are not enough.
VISION combines world-class industrial engineering, computer science and a distinctive new approach that we call Commitment-Based Design. Bringing the three together, we produce designs for strategic processes and technologies of remarkable simplicity that can be built and implemented in less time than people think possible. Commitment-Based Design, which we have pioneered, gives us powerful frameworks and tools to analyse, understand and influence human behaviour in the design of our clients' businesses.
Our business designers interact rigorously in situations that previously were considered 'soft' and not amenable to rigorous interpretation. For example:
- when people in an enterprise listen, design and take action
- when an enterprise builds, loses and rebuilds trust with customers, suppliers, employees, investors, regulators and others
- when leaders, executives and managers create the structures in which the morale and ambition of the enterprise are built
- when value and waste are built as people work with customers, suppliers, employees and others.
Customers first
With the help of this approach, VISION puts customers - inside and outside our clients' businesses - at the centre of every process.
We work closely with the people most affected by change.
We work with our clients' people to build a shared interpretation of where existing processes have broken down.
We guide the preparation of a design for how a new regime, supported by new technologies, can create significant benefits.
Then we work beside our clients to build those new ways of working.
