Mustard Seed offers hope to the marginalised
Mustard Seed Communities is a non-profit organisation that operates primarily in the ghetto areas of Kingston, Jamaica.
The organisation's primary aim is the care of abandoned and disabled children, offering hope by providing accommodation, love and education.
Mustard Seed also manages facilities in Haiti, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe and the Dominican Republic, where it aims to improve the standard of living for the most marginalised people.
Operating under conditions of extreme poverty, Mustard Seed attempts to respond to the many cries for help emanating from members of these forgotten, divided and often violent communities.
The driving force behind Mustard Seed is Father Gregory Ramkissoon, a Trinidadian Catholic priest.
The core philosophy behind the charity is the enrichment and empowerment of the spiritually, psychologically and financially poor, to enable them to escape from the cycles of frustration and hopelessness that dominate their lives.
VISION's involvement
VISION Trust has been involved in a number of initiatives which has assisted Mustard Seed in its efforts:
- setting up a specialised Internet cafe, the Zinc Link, for use of the residents of the inner city to harness the power of the Internet
- developing a distance learning programme, where expertise and knowledge can be transferred to individuals in Jamaica
- developing a fully enabled e-commerce website through which handcrafted Mustard Seed greeting cards and ceramics can be sold. Visit: www.mustardseed.com
A majority of VISION employees donate a percentage of their salaries directly to Mustard Seed Communities.
Zinc Link Internet Cafes
Mustard Seed Communities now operates four internet cafés (Zinc Link I - IV) three of which are open to the public and operate as small businesses, which provide a much needed service to the communities they serve and also generate some surplus income to help finance Mustard Seed's caring activities. The fourth is located in a large inner city school and is used by the school children, parents and teachers.
