Financial 911 offers online help to bereaved families
Financial 911 was created to help those who lost family members in the September 11 terrorist attacks, to obtain free professional advice on their financial needs.
Shortly after the attacks in New York and Washington it was recognised that bereaved spouses and families needed help with their financial affairs: insurance settlements, pension or retirement issues, mortgages and college fees.
For most families, money was not the problem; rather, fear, anxiety, uncertainty and lack of skill were the obstacles.
Financial 911 matched families and volunteer financial planners and other experts. Volunteers were asked to adopt a family for 12 months and support them in working back to autonomy, financial independence and self-reliance. This was all done without incurring any fees or commissions.
In response to the efforts of Financial 911, the office of Mayor Guiliani of New York called Financial 911 an "answer to one of our many prayers".
