Title: Repo and Bond Application - Reverse Re-engineering
The Bank was about to commence a project to implement new, more sophisticated systems to process Bonds and Repos securities. The existing system had many interfaces with related systems and a key factor in the success of the redevelopment was the implementation of the replacement system without disruption or loss of capability of any related systems. In preparation for the design, build and testing stages it was decided to produce a consolidated specification of each interface in both business and technical terms, and to prepare sets of business test scenarios for eventual use in testing the replacement system and its interfaces.
The VISION team devoted the initial three weeks on client site to scoping the requirement, confirming the interfaces concerned, defining the format and standard for the specification and test scenarios, and producing an estimate and plan for carrying out the work. A small number of sample specifications were prepared to verify the estimate and plan. The team then relocated back to the VISION offices and commenced the task of specifying the business requirement of each interface, the technical specification and business test scenarios in order to test the interfaces.
Within the initial four months, the top priority interfaces were specified and business test cases were prepared and reviewed with Bank staff. General feedback from these reviews was that the work had been carried out to an excellent standard and the specifications were already being used for support purposes ahead of their intended use.
